Support + Resources

If you or someone you know are struggling with grief and your mental health, need an impartial ear to listen, or a podcast or book to help you feel less isolated and lost, you may find something here that will offer comfort and support.

There are now so many incredible organisations, websites, books, podcasts, Instagram accounts and other resources that I couldn’t even have imagined back in 2017 when I was first plunged into deep grief. I particularly like podcasts as it can be difficult to focus enough to read when you’re really in the trenches.

These are just a few suggestions which I hope are helpful. Some of these I’ve devoured in full, some I’ve dipped in and out of, and some have just come highly recommended – but I think they’ll all be relevant to someone. If there are other great support sources or resources you’ve found especially impactful, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with recommendations.

I would also highly encourage you to speak to your workplace about training to support bereaved employees and colleagues as this could make all the difference to somebody who is suffering. You can find more information about this here.

An important note:

If you still need further support, please don’t feel afraid to reach out to a mental health professional. You can speak to your GP about what counselling or other support might be available to you in your region, and charities such as MIND provide extensive guidance and contacts for help with various challenges from bereavement to addiction, abuse and general mental health.

Support Organisations and Charities

Some of the following charities and organisations have been instrumental in helping us through the loss of our son Stewie, whether through providing counselling, memory making tools, opportunities to join funded retreats for bereaved parents, or helping make connections with other bereaved families. You can find out more about which charities we are supporting in Stewie’s memory through fundraising here, as well as seeing which ones could help your workplace through bereavement training and education here.

Aching Arms supports bereaved parents with comfort bears to fill empty arms, counselling and a helpline. Aching Arms also provides training to workplaces to help support employees and colleagues through loss.

You can read more about our experience with Aching Arms here.

Child Bereavement UK logo

Child Bereavement UK helps families to rebuild their lives when a child grieves or when a child dies. The charity supports children and young people (up to the age of 25) when someone important to them has died or is not expected to live, and parents and the wider family when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying.

We received monthly couples’ counselling sessions with Child Bereavement UK after the stillbirth of our son Stewie, which was instrumental to helping us support each other through both our shared and individual grief.

SANDS logo

SANDS exists to reduce the number of babies dying and to ensure that anyone affected by the death of a baby receives the best possible care and support for as long as they need it.  SANDS is the driver behind Baby Loss Awareness Week, a national campaign to raise the profile of baby loss and encourage anyone bereaved by it to reach out for support.

Teddy’s Wish funds lifesaving research into SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), neonatal death and stillbirth, and supports grieving families with counselling as well as funding annual retreats for parents who have lost a baby due to SIDS, stillbirth or neonatal death.

SLOW is a bereavement charity supporting people through the devastating loss of their children and siblings. The charity offers support groups for bereaved parents and adult siblings, quarterly creative workshops for SLOWsibs aged 6-15 years, and resources for those working with bereaved families.

The Worst Girl Gang Ever logo

The Worst Girl Gang Ever is a support platform and podcast for miscarriage and baby loss, offering an online membership community to connect with others living through similar experiences.

Saying Goodbye provides comprehensive information, advice, support and much more to anyone who has suffered the loss of a baby, at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

Tommy's logo

Tommy’s is dedicated to finding causes and treatments to save babies’ lives as well as providing trusted pregnancy and baby loss information and support. Tommy’s is the largest charity in the UK carrying out research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, carrying out more than £2million worth of ground-breaking research every year.

Petals specialises in providing counselling to support parents who experience mental health issues as a result of bereavement, trauma or loss related to pregnancy including miscarriage, stillbirth, termination for medical reasons (TFMR) and neonatal loss.

The Lily Mae Foundation provides a support network to bereaved parents following the loss of a baby, training and support for midwives and other health and social care professionals, and research into what can be done to help prevent the loss of a baby in the future.

The Miscarriage Association was founded in 1982 by a group of people who had experienced miscarriage and continues to offer support and information to anyone affected by the loss of a baby in pregnancy, to raise awareness and to promote good practice in medical care.

Abigail’s Footsteps is a baby loss charity providing support and counselling for bereaved parents and families as well as specialist bereavement training for midwives and healthcare professionals.

Lenny’s Legacy is a charity which aims to support parents bereaved through pregnancy, infant or child loss. The organisation was founded by bereaved parents Roy and Mim in loving memory of their two sons Lenny and Bhai who tragically died.
