Travelling

Travelling is one of the greatest joys and privileges that life has to offer, but most importantly to me it’s the reason that Travels With My Son exists. By a stroke of luck, or perhaps even fate, our beautiful son Stewie got to travel around seven countries with us in his short but significant life, and we created so many memories together which we will cherish for the rest of our lives. But our travels with him didn’t end there. In fact due to an incredible biological process called microcherism, cells from our babies cross the placenta and remain in our bodies from our blood to our hearts, and even pass to their future siblings. This means that no matter where I go, my son will always be there – a physical part of me (and hopefully his siblings), with me for all of my travels and experiences for the rest of my life. That’s why I chose the name Travels With My Son – to remember what was, but also look forward to what will be.

But my connection to travel doesn’t end (or begin) there. Even before our adventures with Stewie, travel was a huge part of my life. I grew up moving from country to country because of my father’s job, and then dedicated my career to sustainability for the fashion industry – which at its core is centred on global connections. So travel is in my blood, and I have many experiences and recommendations to share.

But to me, travelling goes deeper than finding the most photographic locations or the best restaurants. Travelling helps us remember past experiences and connects us to our loved ones – in my case both my father and my son. Travelling to me is also about gaining space and perspective away from our everyday lives and challenges, finding room to breathe, seeking inspiration, and creating lifelong memories that we will treasure for years to come and return to when the days are dark.

So I hope you find something that inspires you here, and perhaps encourages you to explore the world, whether from the comfort of your home or in real life. From Cornwall to Lisbon, Venice to Bangkok, New York to Mexico City, Madrid to Morocco, Malta, the Seychelles, Thailand and beyond, my goal is to share how exploring the world can help heal our souls, as well as broaden our horizons.

Cornwall – our most treasured places

I would say that Cornwall bookended, and therefore was the inspiration – along with our ‘Big Adventure’ – for what was to become Travels With My Son, and so it feels only right that Cornwall is where I begin. Our son Stewie was never technically ‘with’ us in Cornwall. When…
